Transcript
Hello, darling heart, and welcome to the drink less live better podcast.
-:This is the podcast that helps you to see that drinking less doesn't need to be stressful, lonely, or boring.
-:I'm your host, Sarah Williamson, and I decided to have a year alcohol free as a little life experiment and haven't looked back.
-:With my experience and training, I now help other people with their alcohol free or drink less adventures.
-:You can find out more and sign up to my 5 day drink less challenge at drink less live better dot com.
-:I'm here to tell you that you can relax, connect, and have fun without alcohol in your life.
-:Join me here each week to find out how.
-:This episode is called throw the kitchen sink at it, and it includes all of the good advice that I used for myself in the early days of my sobriety.
-:When I first made the decision to stop drinking for 1 year as an experiment, I virtually ended up making not drinking my full time job for a while.
-:I'm not for a second suggesting that you do the same, but I am suggesting that this strategy worked for me.
-:Not only did it work for the goal I had of achieving a year alcohol free, but in fact, I really cannot imagine going back to drinking now.
-:First of all, I would suggest that you get really clear on the reasons why you want this goal and how long are you going to
-:do this for, this experiment, this challenge, whatever you're going to call it?
-:Please make sure you write this stuff down.
-:I'm not fussy about whether you use a journal, a diary, a notebook or perhaps an app on your phone.
-:It really doesn't matter, just get it down somewhere. Next, gather your people around you.
-:Use Facebook, Instagram, YouTube or wherever it is that you hang out on social media.
-:Find your people and gather them closely to you.
-:Be inspired by them and follow closely in the footsteps of people who are just a few paces along the path of where you want to be.
-:Tell the people you need to share it with, whether your family, your partner, your close friends but also don't feel like
-:you have to tell anybody if you don't want to.
-:Make your decision and then choose to be happy or, at the very least, content with your choice.
-:Please don't be miserable about this decision.
-:Get some support or guidance to process your feelings or emotions if this is hard for you.
-:Do you need a good therapist or a counsellor on your side?
-:Make use of them if you do.
-:Eliminate some of the other things that are taking up your energy.
-:Keep it simple, Sister, and say no to the things that you don't have to do.
-:Take some time to buy and try some of the amazing alcohol free drinks that are on the market now.
-:Save the money you're not spending on alcohol or junk food or random late night Amazon purchases oh, or was that just me?
-:And spend that money on 1 of 2 things, either things that are going to make your heart sing, for me that's a massage once
-:a month, or spend that money on eliminating things that do not make you feel good.
-:For me, that is cleaning, and I love spending the money I don't spend on alcohol on my cleaner.
-:Every time I think that I might possibly want a drink, I just think to myself, well, you can go ahead and do that, but that
-:will mean you have to cancel Zoe the cleaner, and let me tell you that is never gonna happen.
-:Get creative, find a hobby or try some new things as a pastime, and if you can't get stuck into one particular thing then enjoy trying lots of new things. Stay in your lane.
-:Don't worry if your partner, family, or friends don't understand your choice at the moment. Read the books. Some people call it quit lit.
-:Find what you like and then ask for more recommendations along those lines.
-:Listen on Audible if reading isn't your thing. Find podcasts that you love.
-:Oh, hello, like this one for example.
-:Listen to something every day, especially in the early evening, find yourself an accountability partner, ask for what support you need, Rest well. Eat well.
-:Get hydrated and move, even if it's just a tiny bit.
-:Choose new adventures, days out, holidays or retreats.
-:And speaking of retreats, I'm now taking bookings for my drink less, live better retreat in February 2023.
-:We're heading to Surrey for 3 days and 2 nights of relaxing, rejuvenating and resetting.
-:Our beautiful spiritual retreat house is stately yet cozy, warm and and welcoming.
-:We're going to step away from our day to day distractions and demands and start to explore our next steps in our alcohol free lives.
-:Whether you're newly sober or have been sober for an extended period of time, you are very welcome.
-:I've booked some amazing workshops with some totally inspiring leaders.
-:The chef who will be catering for us is amazing, and the setting we are staying in could not be more perfect.
-:There's still time to pay for the retreat over a 5 month payment plan of just £135 per month. DM me any questions.
-:These 8 spaces are ready and waiting to be booked.
-:I'd love it if one of them went to you.
